Nigeria: U.S. Praise Police Over Elections Security, Credibility

The government of the United States of America (USA) has lauded the Nigerian police for its exemplary performance in providing security for the 2015 general elections.
The US Ambassador to Nigeria James Entwistle made the commendation Monday during a visit to the office of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Suleiman Abba at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
According to Ambassador Entwistle, the police together with other security agencies and the civil society did a remarkable job in creating an enabling environment in ensuring the credibility of the elections.
He pointed out that the story of the elections is an example for democracy in Africa, noting that: "everyone was worried that there would be some level of violence which was dramatically less than most people believed."
"Some of the reasons we could point at that led to this achievement are the sense of introducing accountability to the system, performance of security forces and various messages from civil society organizations, religious bodies and international organizations," he added.
Ambassador Entwistle assured the IGP of the US Government's resolve to partner with the police in area of training and to focus on continous reformation.
Responding, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Suleiman Abba said the credit of the performance should go not only to the leadership of the police but to those at the polling units and those who escorted election materials.
He pointed out that the police after he took command in August 2014 began the implementation of the strategy to secure the elections.
IGP said: "what brought us to where we are the directive to officers to be civil, none partisan and impartial adding greater value to the credibility of the elections."
He added that: "the mindset of police officers is charged to work within the limits of the law."
