Lexus unveils the all-new RX in New York
New model should be in Europe towards the end of 2015
Lexus has just unveiled the all-new RX at the New York
International Auto Show. The new machine has a longer wheelbase, more
room and higher levels of comfort and luxury. The RX has proven itself
to be a massive machine for Lexus as it is now the best-selling model in
the manufacturer’s 26-year history. The all-new RX will introduce the Lexus Safety System+, which is their latest offering in advanced safety equipment. This new feature, according to Lexus, will help “avoid or mitigate collisions at a wide range of vehicle speeds”. The system uses “millimetre-wave radar” that keeps the RX in its intended lane using the Lane Keeping Assist feature. Other safety equipment includes Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-Collision System, Lane Departure Alert, and Automatic High Beam (AHB) - which helps maintain “the best forward visibility when driving at night”.
Depending on what market you’re in, the RX will offer a 3.5litre engine offering 300hp, this will be matched with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The hybrid powertrain will feature an Atkinson cycle 3.5-litre V6. System output, including the electric motor, will also be around 300bhp.
Both of these power trains will also be available in an F Sport version – which will be “aimed at customers seeking more excitement and performance from their luxury SUV.” In this model’s Drive Mode Select system there will be a “Sport S+” mode in addition to Eco, Normal and Sports S settings.
Details and specifications of the production model for Europe will be announced later this year.
