After the goalless draw against Arsenal at the weekend, Chelsea are within touching distance of the Premier League title.
A win against Leicester City on Wednesday night would mean that Jose
Mourinho’s side can start the celebrations on their return to Stamford
Bridge, providing they beat Alan Pardew’s Crystal Palace at the weekend.
The home side are fighting to stay in the Premier League at the
moment and have won their last four matches, so are in better shape than
they could ever hope to be for the visit of the league leaders and
champions elect. But Nigel Pearson has a few injury doubts to contend
with, including David Nugent, Jamie Vardy and Jeffrey Schlupp.
Meanwhile, Mourinho will still be without a forward as it’s unlikely
he would be willing to risk the fitness of Diego Costa here, Loic Remy
is out with a calf injury and at his age Didier Drogba doesn’t look fit
enough to last 45 minutes, let alone 90 despite the manager opting to
leave him out there a lot of the time. Chelsea’s Didier Drogba could play a cameo role (Picture: Reuters)
Brazilian attacker Oscar was unfortunate to suffer a suspected
concussion when he collided with Arsenal goalkeeper David Ospina on
Sunday, so it is doubtful that he will feature in today’s game which may
give expensive bench warmer Juan Cuadrado a chance in the starting
line-up.
John Terry is aiming to play 38 straight matches in the league for
the first time and I don’t anticipate any other changes in the back five
unless Mourinho gives Kurt Zouma and Filipe Luis a run out in order to
rest the likes of Gary Cahill, Branislav Ivanovic or Cesar Azpilicueta.
Cesc Fabregas, Nemanja Matic and Ramires are likely to feature in
middle of the park and Ramires may even be pushed up onto the right with
Willian in the playmaker role and Eden Hazard in his accustomed
position to the left of the midfield attack.
As mentioned, Drogba will probably start this one but seeing as
Chelsea practically have the league won and the fact that a younger man
may be of more use, it would be interesting to worry a relegation
threatened side with an unknown entity like Dom Solanke.
Chelsea have been the masters of a tactical battle against Manchester
United and Arsenal recently, but expect them to be masters of a
different kind this evening and keep things interesting the fight for
survival as they march towards the Premier League title.
