Former MTN employees jailed for 9 years over sh3.1b theft
THE former employees of telecom company MTN have been sentenced to 9 years each imprisonment for stealing sh3.1b.

Justice Paul Mugamba the head of the Anti- Corruption Court on Tuesday sentenced Joseph Magombe, Daniel Ssegujja, and Irene Kauma to 9 years in prison.

Also sentenced were Edrisa Sserunkuma, Henry Matovu and Peter Ayebale only identified as a businessmen.

“Cybercrime is on the rise and our society ought to learn that crime does not pay. They should be punished for the unauthorised access. Cybercrime is harmful. I have noted that the crime was premeditated and the crime was carefully executed.” Mugamba said.

Justice Mugamba however said he was mindful of the fact the convicts had been on remand for two years.

State Attorney Mario Acio from the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) had asked court to impose maximum sentence on grounds the convicts occasioned colossal loss to MTN.

Acio had also asked court to order the convicts to pay compensation of sh450m to MTN adding that they made the public lose confidence in the company and its mobile transactions.

Acio said some of the money stolen was recovered from the convicts and asked court to order that the money be returned to MTN. Court subsequently ordered that about sh100m should be returned to MTN.

Their lawyers asked court to impose a fine as opposed to a custodial sentence and said the convicts should be given chance to reform.

All the accused pleaded with court for lenient sentences saying court should consider the two years they spent on remand. All the accused have been remand since February 8, 2015.

Prosecution led by Acio said that the suspects on January 25, 2013 stole sh3.15bn, property of MTN Uganda, at the MTN offices on Yusuf Lule Road in Kampala.

Prosecution said the convicts and others still at large within Kampala conspired to commit a felony of theft in the same month.
