Convicted felon escapes Birmingham City Jail

A woman escaped from the Birmingham City Jail Tuesday night, and remains at large.

Kimberly Hope Hatfield, 27, walked out of the jail when another inmate was being released, said Birmingham police spokesman Lt. Sean Edwards. Hatfield has a lengthy criminal history, including seven felony convictions, but is not believed to be dangerous.

Edwards said Hatfield was in the process of being released when she escaped. Birmingham corrections officers were running her through the computer system to see if she had any holds for other jurisdictions before they let her go, and she ducked behind the inmate being released and eased out of building, Edwards said.

She likely knew she did, Edwards said, because she had outstanding warrants. Crime Stoppers recently featured Hatfield for her outstanding second-degree theft warrant. In that case, she stole a gun, authorities said.

She also has as a string of arrest and convictions dating back to 2010 for theft, bad checks, obstruction of justice and possession of a forged instrument. She was being held in the Birmingham City Jail failure to appear in court and falsifying her identity, Edwards said.

Crime Stoppers said her last known address was on Falcon Drive in Cottondale, but she also has ties to Trussville, Center Point and Pinson.
