Popular Catholic priest and spiritual director of Adoration Ministry, Enugu, Ejike Mbaka has accused the the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of freezing his bank accounts.
Rev. Fr. Mbaka claimed that sources had traced the freezing of his accounts to the EFCC, adding that the operatives who had carried out the operation were detailed from Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital.
The Nation reports that the priest was asked to report at their Port Harcourt office on an unspecified date.
Speaking on behalf of the priest, Mbaka's media aide, Maximus Ugwuoke said: “All the cheques issued to the banks today (yesterday) were returned. We don’t know why they decided to use EFCC operatives from Port Harcourt while the zonal headquarters is here in Enugu. ”
Ugwuoke said the action might not be unconnected with the December 31, 2014 message in which Fr. Mbaka criticised President Jonathan’s administration.
Mbaka this month during one of his sermons had raised the alarm that his life is being threatened by President Jonathan and the first Lady, Patience Jonathan.
Meanwhile, the EFCC has denied freezing the bank account of the Priest.
Head of Media and Publicity of the commission, Mr. Wilson Uwujiaren, in a statement last night, said: “The attention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has been drawn to reports in a section of the media claiming that the Commission had frozen the accounts of Enugu-based Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka of the Adoration Mass fame.
“The Commission wishes to state that there is no truth in the report and should be discountenanced.”
